Mozilla for Windows

ThomsonNOW supports Mozilla for Windows version 1.2.1–1.7.12. The following setup procedures will help you get the best performance from ThomsonNOW. If you have problems with ThomsonNOW later on, begin your troubleshooting by reconfirming these settings.


Caution: Use only the full version of Mozilla, not Netscape. If Netscape is currently your default browser, see Using a Second Browser for ThomsonNOW.

Allowing Cookies in Mozilla for Windows

ThomsonNOW uses cookies to track your school name and preferences, among other things. Here's how to enable them in Mozilla for Windows.


Note: The following setup procedures are based on Mozilla for Windows 1.7.5. Other versions may differ slightly.

To allow cookies in Mozilla for Windows
  1. Select Edit > Preferences.
  2. Select Privacy & Security > Cookies.
  3. Select Allow all cookies.
  4. Click OK.

Allowing Pop-ups in Mozilla for Windows

ThomsonNOW uses pop-up windows to display error messages and Help. Here's how to enable them in Mozilla for Windows.


Note: The following instructions are for Version 1.7. The exact steps for different versions of Mozilla may vary slightly.

To allow pop-ups in Mozilla for Windows
  1. Select Edit > Preferences.
  2. Expand Privacy & Security and select Popup Windows.
  3. Be sure the Block unrequested popup windows option is NOT selected.
  4. Click OK.
To allow pop-ups in Mozilla for Windows for ThomsonNOW only
  1. Select Edit > Preferences.
  2. Select Privacy & Security > Popup Windows.
  3. Be sure the Block unrequested popup windows setting is selected.
  4. Click Allowed Sites...
  5. Type or copy the ThomsonNOW URL (or type *.ilrn.com) into the field labeled "Allow popups from the following web sites:"
  6. Click Add. The ThomsonNOW URL is added to the list of allowed sites.
  7. Click OK twice.

  8. Note: There are many third-party pop-up blockers (Google, Yahoo!, etc.) available for Internet browsers. If you are using any of these, consult their directions for instructions on allowing pop-ups.

Configuring Cache Settings in Mozilla for Windows

Cache settings determine how Web pages are stored or refreshed in your system's memory. Optimal cache settings help display your ThomsonNOW pages quickly and correctly.

To configure cache settings in Mozilla for Windows
  1. Select Edit > Preferences.
  2. Select Advanced > Cache.
  3. Under Compare the page in the cache to the page on the network, select Every time I view the page.
  4. Click OK.

Clearing Cache and Cookies in Mozilla for Windows

If you ever start seeing errors in ThomsonNOW, a good first troubleshooting step is to clear your browser cache and cookies. You will need to reselect your school the next time you sign in.

To clear the Mozilla for Windows cache
  1. To clear the Mozilla browser cache, go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Cache.
  2. Click the Clear Cache button, and then click the OK button.
To clear the Mozilla for Windows cookies
  1. To clear the stored cookies in Mozilla, go to Tools > Cookie Manager > Manage Stored Cookies.
  2. Click the Remove All Cookies button, and then click OK to exit.

Enabling Javascript in Mozilla for Windows

ThomsonNOW requires Javascript for many of its functions. If you get a Javascript failure in the System Check, you may need to update your browser software. However, it may be that you simply need to enable Javascript in your browser before starting ThomsonNOW. (Mozilla 1.7.5 shown; other versions may differ.)

To enable Javascript in Mozilla in Windows
  1. Select Edit > Preferences.
  2. Under Advanced, select Scripts & Plug-ins.
  3. Under Enable Javascript for, select Navigator.
  4. Under Allow scripts to, select all the available settings.
  5. Click OK.
