Setting up Java on the Mac

ThomsonNOW's on-line learning environment makes use of the free Java Runtime Environment (JRE) browser plug-in for advanced features. Macs have Java installed already; depending on your browser, however, you may need a specific version for ThomsonNOW.

Most students won't need the JRE for ThomsonNOW, but it is recommended. For instructors, administrators, and ThomsonNOW authors, the JRE is required.

Testing for Java

The following problems in ThomsonNOW indicate you may need to install Java or install a different version (see System Requirements for details).

Checking Your Java Version

If you are not sure of your computer's version of Java, here's how to check it in the Mac OS.

To check your Java Version on the Mac
  1. Open the Apple menu.
  2. Select About this Mac > More Info > Software > Applications.
  3. If you have Java installed, you will find an entry for Java Plugin Settings, which includes the version number (for example, JRE 1.3.1 Plugin Settings).
